Controls Engineer Intern

The Fitch Company

May 2022 - August 2023 | Bangor, Maine

My Role

During my time as a member of the Fitch Company Team, I held a role within the programmers group. Our primary focus was meeting clients needs which involved programming PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers) and HMIs (Human-Machine Interfaces). All of these devices depended on compatibility with ladder logic and scripting being required for most projects. However, my involvement extended well beyond programming. I became engaged in various IT-related aspects which led to network design and keeping the companies day-to-day operations going. In this dynamic environment, I had the opportunity to immerse myself in the world of IT infrastructure. I acquired hands-on experience with IP addressing, became familiar with the OSI Model, and I configured servers and network switches. This multifaceted exposure broadened my skill set which I could apply not only for in-house networking but also for many Fitch clients. This internship exposed me to a diverse array of manufacturing processes which was eye-opening, as it provided me with insights into the inner workings of various manufacturing industries. I found myself navigating uncharted territory, which ultimately led to the development of strong debugging skills but also an increase in confidence. These skills became invaluable as I encountered and resolved challenges in this unique and fast moving field. Overall, my time as a member of the Fitch team was not only a gateway to making a tangible impact in the pulp and paper industry but also an opportunity for personal and professional growth, paving the way for a versatile skill set that I carry forward in my career.

Network Engineer Intern

Sappi Somerset Mill

May 2021 - August 2021 | Skowhegan, Maine

My Role

After my first year of college, I interned at the Sappi Somerset Mill which is one of the largest pulp and paper mills in Maine. During my time here, I documented and tracked fiber optic cables that were run on the paper machines. Most of the cables were installed during an upgrade but never documented, so instead installing extra fibers for new I/O, my documentation would allow engineers to utilize unused fibers which would overall, save money. I physically tracked each fiber run and made CAD drawings that showed mapped locations and then updated their fiber database. This was my first experience with industrial networking and I really enjoyed the mixture of office and field work. During the documentation process, I was taught what PLC's and HMI's were, how they interacted with I/O and the big picture of how the paper machine's worked. Also, I investigated the woodyard and pulp mill which gave me a much bigger picture of how paper is made. I learned a lot about safety in a mill enviornment and high voltage electrical safety.
